Ghost stories about previous owners and patrons have developed over the years, and the ghost who receives the most attention is that of a little girl.

Some believe her to be the ghost of Sarah, the niece of Isaac Stubbs who owned the hotel in the 1800's. The problem is, Sarah passed away when she was an adult, but could it be her ghost reverting back to childhood and a time when life was more simple and fun? A photo of "Sarah's room" which holds a couple of items that actually belonged to her as a child when she lived in the hotel.

Sarah

People believe the ghost of Sarah manifests as a child because the little girl's ghost was not seen until Sarah's belongings were moved from the Harriet Beecher Stowe room to what now holds the museum's display of the 1800's bedroom. Others feel the ghost of the little girl is Eliza Clay, the daughter of Henry Clay, who passed away as a child in 1825 due to an illness with a high fever. Another ghostly report includes that of Charles R. Sherman who became an Ohio Supreme Court Judge in 1823. Judge Sherman died at the hotel in 1829.

We arrived early in the afternoon and ate lunch in the tavern. While enjoying our food I had a view of the restaurant and noticed residual energy that took the form of women dancing in long, Victorian dresses. I’m assuming that during the time period when the new additions were built, the restaurant area held balls and parties. The room we stayed in was the Harriet Beecher Stowe room on the fourth floor, directly across from Sarah’s room. After reading information posted on Sarah's room, we learned that the Harriet Beecher Stowe room was originally Sarah’s room, and when they moved her belongings to the room that currently houses the items, the ghost of the little girl became active.

On the second floor, which consists mostly of dining rooms and a couple of private guest rooms, we sensed the spirit of an older man. After taking some photos while following our senses, we captured what we believe to be a paranormal anomaly.

Following the energy of a man that manifested into an orb (see above), I stepped into the hallway and took this photo (below left). Further down the hallway to the main staircase we encountered a second form of paranormal energy (below middle). Following the man and a second energy up the stairs to the third floor (below right). Anomaly with midtone and contrast adjusted:

What I sensed on the fourth floor was the spirit of a young girl who seemed to be having fun with us. She moved quickly, and we had the most experiences when we took breaks from investigating. When sitting on the bench (below left) having a personal conversation I was touched on my right arm. I turned quickly and asked if that was the girl the call Sarah. We heard giggling and the energy disappeared. Our opinion resulted in the fact that the girl spirit enjoyed running, hiding and watching people. She is well aware of her “powers” and that she can hide from people easily after childishly obtaining their attention.
