Howard Street Cemetery
Salem, Massachusetts
The Howard Street Cemetery, established in 1801, is located near the heart of Salem, just around the corner from St. Peter’s Church (circa 1733). Separated from the old Salem Prison by a chain linked fence, it is said to be an extremely haunted cemetery. One of the most famous ghosts is that of Giles Corey, a man accused of witchery though he never admitted that he practiced witchcraft. People believe that Giles was actually crushed to death in what is now an alley next to the cemetery.
The photo to the right is a memorial stone created for Giles Corey. Each innocent victim that was accused of practicing witchcraft and was put to death during the witch hysteria period has a stone dedicated to them in a large memorial within the Old Burying Grounds cemetery.
The historic St. Peter's Episcopal Church located down the street from the Howard Street Cemetery in downtown Salem.
